That Time Mommy Came to Texas

July 15, 2013

It finally happened, y’all! My mom ventured down to Texas to visit me for the weekend and what a great time it was. I hadn’t seen her since I went home in February for a not so great occasion so it was great to be able to spend some time with her.

Thursday I picked her up from the airport and we made our way back to our apartment where she cooed over my furchildren. (They love their Mimi!) We met up with Nick for dinner and then made our way to the Bad Company and Lynyrd Skynyrd concert. Bad Company is one of my mom’s favorites and I was surprised by how many Lynyrd Skynyrd songs that I knew that didn’t talk about a particular southern state… I think you know which one I’m talking about.

Friday I took the day off of work and we lounged around the house in the morning, which was so nice and much needed. After lunch with Nick at Jersey Mike’s, we ventured into Hobby Lobby for what I expected to be a short trip with nothing purchased. Boy, was I wrong! I had asked my mom for some help with decorating the top of my cabinets, and I didn’t want to do the traditional wine bottles or flower vines. My mom is a pretty amazing decorator and she definitely didn’t fail me! An hour later and $100 spent, we left the store happy as clams. Did I mention that we discovered that Hobby Lobby has a sale/clearance section? Yeah, we were in heaven. The day rounded out with a trip to our favorite place: Kohl’s. We did some serious shopping there as well (how about two pairs of shoes, three shirts, two dresses, and a pair of pants for $105? Yeah, we’re awesome).

That evening, I decided to cook my (errr… The Pioneer Woman’s) famous Chicken Parmigiana. We cut it a little close though, because I had to leave for work that evening about halfway through dinner. My mom decided to rest that evening, but I had to work for the John Mayer concert. Not going to lie, I was really more excited to see Phillip Phillips! Phillip put on an awesome show; he’s a great artist! John Mayer’s set was absolutely amazing. Definitely one of the coolest I’ve seen. Unfortunately for those sitting on the lawn… it started pouring rain right before JM went on stage. The entire sky lit up in lightening as the set went on. Cool, but kind of scary and a bit of a bummer for those who got soaked.

A large spread for such a small table!

Saturday I took my mom down to The Galleria to show her the craziness is that is one of the biggest malls in the country. It wasn’t as crowded as I had expected, but much bigger than I had remember. My feet were killing me by the end of it! I wanted her to have a “real” Texas experience, so we headed over to Whataburger and got some fries and spicy ketchup aka amazingness. We drove through downtown to see the huge buildings, then made the drive back to our apartment in the burbs. On the way, we stopped in to check out our Target, which doesn’t seem that cool, but it’s probably the biggest one I’ve ever seen. We stopped into Kirklands and then made our way home to grab the hubs and head to dinner at Pappasito’s. Yummy fajitas ensued (as did sangria and margaritas!) and we had a blast. We ended the day with a dip in the pool (that may or may not have ended with us almost attacking some kids…. yeah….)

I dropped my mom at the airport early Sunday morning and I was so sad for her to leave! I love having my mom around. She’s such an awesome lady and a great friend. I wish she could have stayed here! We didn’t take nearly enough pictures but it was such a memorable trip. I can’t wait to see her again in September. It’s not nearly soon enough!
