That Time I Celebrated Two Marriages

October 1, 2013

I hinted a little bit in my post yesterday about my busy weekend. A close friend and sorority sister got married on Saturday and we hosted a shower for my aunt on Sunday afternoon. It was a non-stop weekend with lots of little extra surprises thrown in!

plane essentials: ipad, wonderful book, sprite. check.

Friday morning I hopped a plane to South Carolina (by way of Charlotte, I didn’t fly direct because I wanted to fly on a bigger plane!) Right before I boarded the plane, my mom told me that my dad fell off of a ladder at work and was being taken to the hospital. Great start to the weekend, huh? You might recall the last time that I saw my dad was in February when he was undergoing open heart surgery due to a heart attack. The guy can’t catch a break!

Saturday morning I woke up bright and early to meet some of my favorite blogger loves for brunch in Charlotte! It was the first time that I met Alexa, Mason or Laura but it felt just so natural. These ladies each had such distinct personalities and we all clicked so well. (Mason and I are the same personality type… it was so crazy how similar we were!) Not to mention that Toast in Dilworth had the best Mimosa that I’ve ever had!

After the yummy brunch I quickly curled my hair, got dolled up and sped to the church. The entire drive I kept thinking “oh, I need to stop there and get some boiled peanuts!” or “OMG, Krispy Kreme! We don’t have those in Houston!” It was only an 18 minute drive but felt like a short compilation of all of the things that I love about South Carolina.

Then it was time for the wedding. You guys. Allison was one of the most beautiful brides that I’ve ever seen. The entire day could be described in just one word: sweet. From the touching dedications about her father who passed away to the new husband and wife singing Wagon Wheel together at the end of the reception to our traditional candle passing, the wedding and reception was just so beautiful. Afterwards we walked down to my favorite bar in my college down and all hung out on the back patio just laughing and laughing. It made me realize just how much I really miss my girls! (And their guys; they sure got some good ones!) The new hubby and wife even joined us at the bar after a while, and I was so glad that they did. (Side note: I almost FROZE, y’all. The highs in SC are the lows in Houston right now, and the 56 degree weather chilled me to the bone!)

me and the bride.   i love the way that they held each other during their first dance!

Sunday morning I made a pit stop at Krispy Kreme (obviously) and continued on back to my parents’ house to get ready for the bridal shower. A little back story: my aunt is only nine years older than me, and 15 years younger than my mom, so she was always more of a sister to me than an aunt. I was so honored that she asked me to be her Matron of Honor! The shower was so much fun. I’m so thankful that both my dad and mom’s sides of the family get along so well. When we all get together, the house is always packed! There was so much love in the room that day. Even my new uncle’s mother and grandmother fit right in!

Needless to say, it was a whirlwind weekend and I’m totally exhausted! But it was all worth it to be able to see my closest friends and family for just a little while.
