StitchFix Review May 2016

May 6, 2016

Before I get onto this month’s review, I have to be really honest with you guys: my last StitchFix box (April 2016) was not great. Nothing fit and I felt like nothing really reflected my style. I didn’t want to give up just yet, so I reached out to my friend Mia, who is another StitchFix user and stylist for the company. She gave me some really great tips on how to improve my boxes and I felt like it really paid off!

Stitch Fix Review May 2016

This month’s box was the best StitchFix box I have ever gotten. Seriously, I’m having such a hard time deciding what to keep, which is where you come in!

In case you aren’t exactly sure what Stitch Fix is, let’s review that before we look at this month’s box. Stitch Fix is a subscription box that is delivered at whatever interval you like (most people probably do monthly but you can certainly do more than that.) You pay a $20 styling fee and receive 5 pieces in your mailbox. It can be anything from shoes to clothes to accessories. Your $20 fee is applied to whatever you keep from your box.

Okay, moving onto the review!

Gilli Tahj Maxi Dress

Gilli Tahj Maxi Dress – $78

Initial impression: I have to admit, when I first pulled the dress out of the box I was very unsure about it! The bottom part of the dress is very silky and the top part is cotton. It’s probably one of the most comfortable dresses I’ve ever put on. I was surprised at how flattering it was on me. It is pretty long. I’m wear 4″ wedges underneath so it’s not perfect for a short person, but Nick (my gracious photographer) actually preferred the dress with wedges.

Verdict: I’m unsure about this one. It’s not exactly work appropriate but it’s perfect for summer and y’all know how I feel about navy… What are your thoughts?

Stitch Fix Daniel Rainn Brixton Ivy

Daniel Rainn Albado Crew Neck Blouse $58
Brixon Ivy Pinson Drape Cardigan $54

Initial impression: As soon as I saw these pieces in the box, I swooned. This cardigan is on my Pinterest board and I was so excited to get it in my box. (You can see how windy it was because the cardigan was flying all over the place!) This top is absolutely perfect for summer. I love the teal color and the floral pattern. So gorgeous!

Verdict: Right now these are my two favorite pieces in the box. I’m very interested in keeping them both, but let’s see how everything else turns out!

Market and Spruce Careen Dolman Knit Top

Market & Spruce Careen V-Neck Dolman Knit Top $48

Initial impression: Navy and stripes? My stylist obviously looked at my Pinterest board. I pretty much live in some combination of the two almost all of the time. This top is super soft and comfortable but not as flowy as I would typically like. I love the cut of it though.

Verdict: I’m extremely torn on this one. I can see myself wearing this a lot, but it is a little plain. Help!

Stitch Fix Papermoon Crochet

Papermoon Kalli Crochet Trim Knit Top $44
Brixon Ivy Pinson Drape Cardigan $54

Initial impression: I was a little nervous about the coral color of this top but I do love the crochet part on the bottom. The straps on the top are lace. Obviously we already know that I love this cardigan (worn with Daniel Rainn blouse above).

Verdict: To be honest, I probably wouldn’t wear this top on it’s own because it hits in some strange places but I really love it under this cardigan. I’m not sure if you can tell in this picture but it also gets really wrinkled and I can’t really ever be bothered to iron stuff. Thoughts?

Overall this Stitch Fix box is probably the best one I’ve ever gotten. I’m so happy that I took the time to work on my Style Pinterest board and leave some detailed notes for my stylist. It really seemed to pay off. I’ll definitely be requesting this stylist again. (Hi Lucy!)

I really love that first dress!

    • Whitney H

      I do too! It’s growing on me…

  • Mia Moore

I’m feelin that dress on you! Very cute and perfect for brunch! How does it look with the drapey cardigan on top?

Let me tell you, that dolman top is amazing. You need it in your life. Yes, I’m trying to hypnotize you via blog comments.

If you’re not in love with the last top, don’t keep it, but I love the color on you!

    • Whitney H

Thank you thank you thank you for all of your help and suggestions! I only ended up keeping the floral top because I felt like the dolman top was a little too snug. I would have liked to size up on that top.

  • Love the dress and the two you love. The navy is fine but for the price, you could find something similar at Marshall’s or somewhere. Like it isn’t special enough, IMO. The coral is pretty but kind of $$ to only be worn as a shell. All are super cute, though!

    • Whitney H

Totally agree with you, thanks for the help! I ended up keeping the floral top but I have a feeling I’ll regret not having kept the cardigan.

  • I think if you send that maxi back, you’ll find yourself reaching for it later this summer and wishing you’d kept it. Obvi keep that cardigan! It’s perfect! And the teal floral is such a great work-to-weekend piece, and the color couldn’t be lovelier on you. The navy top does look exactly like you. If you’ve got something like it*, send it back, but if you don’t, it’ll be your new standby. In my experience, passing on an item that should be my standby always results in me searching for something I love as much, when nothing else is quite as perfect.

*Also, if you have something like it, is it in great condition? Could it use replacing? I’m so adamant about all of this because this always happens to me with striped shirts! Think of how low your cost per wear will be — surely you’ll wear it once every two weeks, if not once week. ;)

    • Whitney H

You’re amazing for this feedback, Nicole! I ended up sending the dress back only because I couldn’t justify keeping it at the price point plus the fact that it was about 4″ too long on me. I kept the floral top because you’re right – it was the perfect work-to-weekend piece!

  • I love love love the cardigan and the teal top! Keep them!!!!!!

The maxi dress is cute, but do you really want a dress that requires wedges/heels? Sometimes you want to wear flats!

The coral top is super-cute, but I want easy-maintenance clothing.

I’m also addicted to stripes, but if price is the thing, keep the cardigan and the teal top over the striped top.

    • Whitney H

You pretty much described exactly what I asked myself when evaluating the clothes. I really don’t want to keep a dress that requires me to wear wedges/heels, especially because I am SUPER clumsy and fall down when wearing wedges. I ended up keeping the teal top. Can’t wait to wear it!

  • Morgan

Hi Whitney, can I ask what Mia suggested in order to improve your box? I’m having trouble with getting clothes that fit my style even after I pin several things and try to describe what I’m looking for with feedback and my profile. Thanks!

    • Whitney H

Hi Morgan! The two big pieces of advice she had were 1) less is more when it comes to pinning and 2) be specific when writing to your stylist. I found that when I pared down the number of pins I had and really focused on specific trends (stripes, boho, flowy) it really worked for me. I also specifically asked for a cardigan and flowy tops, and that’s what I got! I hope that helps!

  • KRS

Hi there! I clicked over from Stitch Fix and I have to say, that cardigan is simply gorgeous! I would 100% keep it and wear it all the time! I love the maxi dress on you – I’d keep it if you can comfortably wear it with flats without the hem dragging. :) It looks really fantastic on you.

    • Whitney H

Thank you so much! I wish the dress had been a little shorter. For me, heels were necessary to wear it. I didn’t keep the cardigan but now I’m wishing I had!
