Living in apartments and townhomes for the past six years has had some perks. Unfortunately that has also meant sharing walls with people for the past six years. Once our lease came up in June, we decided that it was time to look for an actual house. Detached, with a garage preferred. We had a few other “needs” and more than a few “wants.”
One of the things I desired most was a space to relax outside. Growing up, some of my favorite memories were hanging out with my family on the front porch or the back deck. I knew that front porches weren’t abundant in the area we were looking in (virtually non-existent, to be honest) so a nice backyard area was the best I could hope for. And I found a pretty amazing place.
I’m not the only one in the family who likes it…
A screened-in back porch is almost a necessity here in Texas, with the amount of mosquitoes and other critters we have here. It’s also pretty great for a kitty that likes to explore, but whose mother does not want her to go missing. (Hint: that’s Susie.)
Every day after work, I grab my book and a drink, walk outside and take my spot on the porch. On the weekends, I often sit on the porch and watch the rain or listen to the rustling of the trees beyond our back fence. It’s so calm and soothing, and is probably the main reason we decided to rent this particular house in the first place. It reminds me that even a thousand miles away from where I grew up, Texas is starting to feel like home.
