Blogger of the Month: Sarah from Pretty Providence

April 6, 2015

One of my favorite things to do on this here bloggity blog is to share with you all some of my favorite fellow bloggers! At the beginning of each month, I’ll shine the spotlight on one blogger and introduce you to some pretty awesome ladies. This month I’m featuring Sarah from Pretty Providence and sharing some photos I took while we were hanging at her place a couple of weeks ago. Her house is GORGEOUS and so is her family!

First, a little background on how I met Sarah: A couple of years ago on the Houston Blogger Social Club Facebook group I saw that a blogger to the Houston area posted her introduction and was interested in getting to know some people in the area. This blogger just so happened to be Sarah from Pretty Providence, a blog I had been following for months! After a small freak out (this girl is a big deal!) I reached out and we had our first blate at Barnaby’s. Since then, I’m so happy to say that Sarah has become one of my best friends in Houston and basically one of my favorite people EVER. Her husband is equally as cool as she is and they have the most adorable baby of all time, who I have decided is my niece.

I asked Sarah a few questions so that you could get to know her as well as I do:

What got you into blogging in the first place?
S: I started a blog in 2007 just as a place to write down my never ending thoughts about trivial things and save links I thought were cool. (This was before Pinterest!) I loved pushing the random “next blog” button in blogger and just seeing what other blogs there were out there. After a while I got really into wedding blogs, then home decor blogs, then coupon blogs, and finally in 2012 Jessica and and I started Pretty Providence. We wanted to share all the ways we were saving money in our day to day lives and still having fun, eating well and making our houses pretty.
Your blog focuses on living frugally; what made you choose that theme?
S: It’s just something I’m obsessed with. When I got married (at age 21) my brother-in-law gave us Dave Ramsey’s Total Money Makeover as a gift. I didn’t even know what consumer debt was before I read it. I got really obsessed with saving money and had always liked thrifting, yard sale shopping, do-it-yourself projects and making old things new again, so that was the type of thing I wanted to share.

Why did you decide to start using contributors?

S: From the beginning we each posted three times a week. We knew it was important to have a consistent schedule and we wanted people to be able to come see something new every day. After a while we couldn’t keep up with posting that often because we were spending more time on each post, trying to take better photos, be more thorough with our tutorials, and promote them adequately across social media. We decided to try out having contributors a couple times a week to lighten our load as far as posting. It’s not really less work, but we don’t have to do as many projects. (DIY’s take time!)
What’s the biggest difference between living in Utah and living in Texas? (Other than Cafe Rio ;] )
S: Climate for sure but is that a boring answer? Utah is dry, mountainous and a desert. Even when it snows it’s generally very dry. Houston is the exact opposite! Culture-wise, I’m a mormon and in Utah about 50% of people are members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (nicknamed the Mormon church) so the culture is very saturated with LDS traditions. A lot of people (including me) don’t drink coffee, tea or alcohol, don’t watch rated R movies, or do anything that costs money on Sundays. It’s almost like we speak a different language, so in Texas I have found that I have to explain a lot of things I do and say to my friends. It’s fun though. I love being somewhere different. I will say I miss my family and funeral potatoes, though.

What’s your favorite part about blogging?
S: I have two. 1. The people I meet and get to be friends with through sharing the same interest. (Like you!) 2. Blogging pushes me to do more creative things that I didn’t make time for before. It’s hard to be motivated to D.I.Y. or do crafts all the time, even if you want to, when you’re working all day or going to school. When I started blogging about that stuff, I had to have new content for my blog so I really had to make time for it. I’m happiest when I’m doing something creative so it’s really good for me that way.

Tell us something about you that we might not know!
S: I mainly listen to rap music. My favorite rappers are Ludacris, Eminem, Jay-Z, Mike Jones, and Chingy – just to name a few! I could list forever though… Not only do I love rap but one of my greatest talents is knowing the lyrics and busting them out along with the rap songs I’m listening to. This surprises and shocks a lot of people. I don’t know why though. Don’t I seem hardcore?

If you were stranded on a desert island, which three bloggers would you want there with you?
S: Well goodness. If I’m thinking strategically I’d want a DIY blogger, a food blogger and a funny blogger. Right? So, Mandi from Vintage Revivals because she can make something out of anything. Lauren from Tastes Better From Scratch because I’ve never tried a recipe of hers that wasn’t amazing. And, Roo from Semiproper because she cracks me up. Seriously, check out her This Is How I Feel series on Fridays.

What’s your favorite snack and drink?
S: I loooove Diet Dr. Pepper (and regular Dr. Pepper too.) and I will take any kind of baked good for a snack. Cookie, cake, bread, Cheetos…. wait, are Cheetos baked? I don’t care. They are my guilty pleasure. #givemeallthecarbs

What’s your favorite thing about living in Texas?
S: I love the people here. I know there are nice people everywhere but I just instantly felt at home in Houston. Most of the Houstonians I’ve met have not only been friendly, but without hesitation have become friends to me. This goes for transplants as well. Also, I love the “winter” here. When everyone in Houston thinks it’s cold, that’s a typical March or April day in Utah.

What are the first three blogs you reach each day?
S: 1. House Tweaking. Dana’s blog + home are so inspiring but she’s also relatable in her writing which is hard to find in DIY blogs! 2. I’m cheating here, but I always read my friends’ blogs when they have a new post. The Observant TurtleEat Drink & Be LaurenShop and TwirlMeg O. on the GoMoms Without Answers! 3. Vintage Revivals. I already mentioned this but Mandi is so creative, I always go to her site for inspiration.
