I've been on the lookout for the perfect foundation for quite a while. I've tried so many different kinds that I've honestly lost track!
I was always a drugstore foundation kind of girl. I used Covergirl basically all throughout college and never had a problem with it. Then again, I wasn't working all day.
Once I graduated and started working, I noticed that my makeup would start to fade pretty quickly during the day, especially in the Houston heat. I have normal skin, not oily at all, but I would sweat it all off very quickly.
I used a coupon for the Almay Smart Shade, hoping that it would match my skin tone. No dice. For some reason, it "thought" that I had dark orange skin. Y'all, I am PALE. It did not work.
After I heard everyone raving about ELF, I decided to try that out. I bought the tinted moisturizer. It was thick and orange. What the heck!?
I was fed up with drugstore brands. I just had a birthday and decided to venture into Ulta for the first time to see if they could help me out. Little did I know that the ladies working the make up area weren't Ulta employees, but salespeople from the individual makeup brands. So of course the first one that I approach takes me straight to her area, which isn't exactly what I was looking for.
I let her work her magic and actually really like what she's done. I bought the pur minerals starter kit and walked out, still feeling a little sick that I spent $50 on some foundation and a brush. I just finished using this foundation a couple of weeks ago and even though I really liked it, there is no way I can bring myself to spend that much again.
Currently, I'm using the Garnier BB Cream, after many recommendations from bloggers. I have to admit though, I'm not a fan. I can feel it on my face and it feels so heavy. My skin feels tight and even kind of sticky. I also got the light/medium and I still feel like it's too dark for my face. I'm not a fan. It feels like I'm wearing a mask.
I'm obviously very frustrated...
I'm looking for something that: 1) won't fade after just a few hours, 2) won't turn me orange or any other color that isn't what I am and 3) doesn't cost an arm and a leg to buy.
am I just being picky or is there really something out there that can help me? What kind of foundation do you use? HELP!

Two words: Revlon Colorstay. The end.
Elf tinted moisturizer - hated it. Garnier BB Crea - hated it. I have tried tons of things and I honestly consider Revlon Colorstay one of my favorite foundations EVER!!!!
After reading's Meg blog I switched and tried this (got the sponge and everything- $20) and my skin has never been better http://www.oismeblog.com/2012/07/product-rave-revlon-colorstay-whipped.html
I have been using Estee Lauder Double Wear foundation for YEARS. It's a bit pricey at $33 but it's SO WORTH IT and it lasts such a long time! It's the only foundation I will ever use. I'm wearing it on my wedding day - that should tell you something!
... I never knew Ulta alespeople were from individual companies. That explains so much. I went in one day looking for mascara, and asked one of the "employees" for something specific. She took me to the Tart or something like that. It wasn't what I was looking for at all, and she was being so pushy! I walked out without any...

You should try the Clinique Super Moisture - it's tinted, but definitely not much, and has been great for my skin. I'm anti-makeup, I really do not like wearing it mainly because of the cakey feeling, but obviously have to most days, and this stuff is great. Light, but covers enough to hide flaws. it's ab $25, but lasts a long time
If I lived closer, I would love to help you find the right shade of Mary Kay foundation. It's the best coverage I've used -- it feels light and looks amazing. I think it's pretty affordable too. (And I thought that before I became a consultant and got a discount.) The bonus? If you get the foundation and it doesn't work for you, you get your money back. If there's any way I can help, please let me know.
How crazy, I was going to do a BB cream review today. I think they key to making foundation last all day is a great primer. My favorite is Cargo, it's a bit of a splurge but if you spend the $ on that they I think you can save a little on a drugstore BB cream. I've been using cargo primer, BB cream, and then a translucent powder to take the shine away. I just add blush at the end and I’m done! I like the L’Oreal brand BB cream, it works pretty well for the price and you can find a great translucent powder at any drugstore. Hope this helps!
Bare minerals!
I use Clarins and love it but it's on the pricey side =\ I've never used a drugstore foundation so I'm obviously no help! Haha
I seriously have the same issues. Most foundations are too dark even when I get the lightest one. I have used bare minerals before and loved it. I always feel guilty about spending so much and than will try a cheap drugstore brand. I usually end up back with Bare Minerals.
I use L'Oreal True Match and I really like it, but I'm also not a big make-up person so I don't really know what I'm talking about haha. It's only about $8 though, so if it doesn't work out at least you didn't spend a fortune! I use the powder, but it also comes in a liquid and compact form.
Ditto with Bri, get a primer. I actually use ELF primer, but then M.A.C.'s concealer (it's nice and heavy without being too heavey, if that makes sense), with Covergirl powder on top so I'm not shiny. Then a little bit of blush and I'm good to go, even in the Texas heat.
*heavy. Without being too heavy.
(Should've proofread.)
I hate make-up and I am super pale and I swear by Benefit's You Rebel Lite tinted moisturizer. It's $30/tube but it lasted me almost two years so well worth it to me! I mainly wanted it to even out my skin tone and I think it does the job great and I can't feel it at all. PS - I get the one in the peachy tube . Good luck!
I use tarte 12 hour amazonian clay foundation and LOVE it! I'm super pale and it blends beautifully. It is a little pricey and "full-coverage" but you seriously can't feel it and it covers up my redness amazingly!
I use Make Up For Ever's HD Invisible Cover Foundation from Sephora. It's $42 but I just recently had to replace my first bottle that I got before Christmas last year...so it lasts a long time.
Personally, I think that foundation is the one thing that you should splurge a little more on...after all, it is the "foundation" you're setting for the rest of your makeup.
I would suggest going into Sephora and having one of the people there help you out. They'll be able to help you find a foundation that's right for your skin type and fits your budget. I've never had a positive experience at any Ulta - the people there have always given me terrible advice.
I hope this helps!!
I'm probably the wrong person to ask, because all foundations (whipped or not) feel like stage make-up to me. Gross. I've only used Bare Minerals for the last seven years. It's $27, but it lasts, is better for my skin, and it feels like nothing. However, I know I'm in the minority and that women want to use true foundation that literally covers their skin. I say go with Meg and Darby's Revlon recommendation.
I agree with the revlon colorstay, but I wear bare minerals and love it! have you tried it?
stop teasing me with guac pics!!!
I know I go on about this all the freaking time, but I LOVE my Laura Mercier Oil-Free Tinted Moisturizer. (They have a normal not oil-free version, too.) It isn't cheap at $43, but it lasts forever - I have a tan color and a pale color, and each lasts me through two seasons (so I'm now switching to the pale color I bought at the beginning of last winter). I don't use much because it works so well and there's always some left at the end (because I throw it out after the second season to be safe) so if you needed more coverage you'd be fine!
The best drugstore foundation I've found is Neutrogena's healthy skin. A lot of people compare it to Nars Sheer glow, but without the hefty price tag. It covers really well but doesn't feel heavy, which is what I didn't like about Revlon ColorStay.
I've always used either Dior or Estee Lauder. They make good stuff.

I've been using CoverGirl foundations for several years - they're not the best but, like you, I don't want to spend $50 on make-up. I usually get the ones in the green or dark brown circle-shaped cases.
